My feet left the ground. When the surrounding matter swirled from a golden shimmer back into a solid stone and wood, I stumbled. A now-familiar warm hand caught my fingers until I found my balance. A pair of wide-set eyes beamed at me from a delicate face. Lips the color of pomegranate. Hair like liquid sunlight. I recognized her instantly.

“Persephone.”

Something silky was on my tongue. I pulled it out. A pink petal with ragged edges sat between my fingers. The goddess teetered.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Sometimes my essence ends up where it doesn’t belong.”

I looked at the matriarch of Hades and fought the urge to rub my eyes. She wore the same blush dress and her arms were circled with golden bracelets. Her skin looked like it’d been polished. Her every curve screamed sensual fertility. The cut in her dress crawled all the way up to her hip and revealed a long leg. Typically, I was a red-blooded straight girl. Now, I wasn’t so sure. Goddesses seduce and then betray you, I reminded myself. Just ask poor Jeremy. And this one knew my name. Not good.

I glanced around. We were standing somewhere that looked like the OMNIA club. The railings over private booths overlooked the swirling chandelier. Somewhere in the distance, I could hear the techno music, but it sounded watered down, as if we were at the bottom of the pool.

“Where—” I cleared my throat. “Where are we?”

“Behind the scenes,” she said. “Don’t worry. Your reality isn’t very far.”

“Are we in your In-Between?” I guessed.

A smile stretched her full lips. “Not quite. We’re in someone’s In-Between. Trespassing.” Her teeth were white and straight as she laughed. “A little sneaking around. Isn’t it fun?”

She grabbed my hand and pulled me along. “Look.”

Her finger pointed toward the dance floor below. Golden outlines of figures bumped and ground against each other. I recognized the dragons. They were still there, still dancing to the watered-down techno. When I looked around again, I saw that those same golden echoes of partiers. They gossiped and drank as if we weren’t really there. Which, I suppose, we weren’t.

Persephone grimaced. “Sorry I startled you. You looked like you needed a bit of rescuing.”

I regarded the goddess. Being rescued by an ancient being usually wasn’t a rescue at all. Running my hands down my dress, I made myself straighten. Countless creatures needed my help, and my partner in literal crime had stabbed me in the back. Whatever games Hades’ wife was playing, I didn’t have time to play along.

“Thank you,” I said, perfectly polite, perfectly boring. “Can you please return me to reality now? There is something important I need to do.” Not that I expected her to give a shit about anything a half-human had lined up.

“I know,” she said gravely. “You have to save your pantheon.” Words froze on my tongue. She smiled. “I remember you, you know. When you devoured those souls years ago.”

“I—”

“You were so devastated,” she said. Her mouth softened in something that looked very much like sympathy.
